Because it's the right thing to do. Landfills are filled past capacity because it's easier for many people to discard unwanted items on the curbside for trash pickup then to recycle or repurpose them.

Darren and Lynne have agreed, no matter what their financial situation may be in the future, to consistently attempt to furnish their home with second-hand items from consignment shops, thrift stores, and gifts. (They do make exceptions for items like cars, computers, food and toiletries, towels and most bed linens, underwear (for obvious reasons), some upholstered furniture, and importantly... mattresses.) They also make frequent donations to local thrift stores, rather than just discarding unwanted items in the trash.

2023 UPDATE: More than 10 years into our ownership of The Ladybug House, we're making good on our promise to buy secondhand as much as possible. Not only does it allow us to fill our home with beautiful and unique pieces at a low cost, but it's better for the earth.
